Solution-Focused Brief Therapy: A comprehensive introduction

Training course with Michael Durrant

4 & 5 May 2017 — Adelaide

Course photoThis popular course provides a comprehensive introduction to the theory and practice of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) and its application to a range of counselling settings. It includes an overview of the Solution-Focused approach and how it fits within the broader "strengths-based" approaches and within the family therapy field. Participants are introduced to the skills and tools of SFBT — the main forms of questioning and interventions. The course includes:

  • The philosophical and theoretical underpinnings of the Solution-Focused approach, including the resilience research conducted within psychiatry;
  • The fundamental shift from "problem-driven" to "solution-driven";
  • Techniques for interviewing clients about seemingly insignificant successes or differences and how to build on these;
  • The "problem-solution discontinuity" and the role of "future-focused" questions in drawing this distinction;
  • Techniques for establishing realistic, workable goals or preferred outcomes with the client;
  • Using future-focused questions to construct achievable outcomes;
  • Scaling questions to create possibilities of movement;
  • Summarising sessions and therapeutic tasks;
  • How issues such as "risk" fit with a Solution-Focused approach;
  • The state of research into the approach.

This course will be particularly suitable for psychologists, social workers, counsellors, mental health nurses, school counsellors, coaches and anyone interested in working EFFECTIVELY and EFFICIENTLY to promote change. It will be relevant BOTH for those who have already had some exposure to Solution-Focused Brief Therapy but would benefit from a comprehensive framework for conceptualising and practising the approach AND also highly applicable for people with no real exposure to the approach. Videotape examples of actual therapy sessions complement the discussion and the skills practice exercises. Examples include cases from substance abuse, trauma, mental health, child and adolescent difficulties and other contexts. Comprehensive course notes are provided.

This training is the most comprehensive introductory Solution-Focused training available in Australia, conducted by Michael Durrant, who had a personal and professional relationship with the founders of the Solution-Focused approach and is a sought-after speaker and trainer internationally.

The course changed my previous paradigm of focussing on "the problem" and then (me) suggesting "solutions" and showed me how to bring out the clients' strengths so they can catch themselves doing things better. It was an enlightening, stimulating experience with several, major "Ah ha" moments — I feel excited and motivated to implement this approach to benefit my clients.

— Maj Gary Dodd, Psychologist, Department of Defence

This was easily the best training I have received in a long time. The workshop has equipped me with the skills to start practising SFBT. I immediately used this approach in my clinical practice and have received spontaneous positive feedback from clients about the interview. In particular I have noticed client's engagement in questions that presume existing skills/ resources/competence, a focus on the future and small achievable goals.

— Blair Hobbs, Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, The Alfred Hospital, Melbourne

I found it very helpful to learn the whole process to follow when using Solution-Focused therapy. I have begun using this therapy with all my clients and at first I felt like I was not doing much; however, all my clients have been reporting rapid improvements. I found the videos and the transcripts the most helpful as I could see exactly how the therapy worked. I thought Michael answered everyone's questions very thoroughly and was a great presenter. I liked that he kept things moving because I get bored when people present too slowly.

— Kathryn Shard, Psychologist, DEECD, Victoria

The course gave me a greater understanding of how Solution Focused therapy can be used with many of my clients. I have used this successfully with a number of my clients. The course really exceeded my expectations. I learned so much and have been able to use the skills in my day-to-day practice. I would definitely recommend the course to others. The venue was very central but way too much food! Michael was very passionate and knowledgeable about the subject matter which motivated the group members and stimulated meaningful discussions.

— Moreen Nesbitt, Senior Caseworker, Mount Druitt Family Violence Service
